University Engagement

The Kennedy School of Government is leading a multi-year training program for senior members of the Indian Administrative Service. And the Project on India and the Subcontinent, sponsored by the School's Belfer Center on Science and International Affairs, is actively advising policymakers on issues that engage both South Asia and the United States—ranging from the India-Pakistan conflict and the U.S.-India strategic relationship to development of nuclear energy and other renewable energy sources.

The Harvard Business School's India Research Center is actively engaged with many of the country's leading companies, and global companies doing business in the region, and is producing an ongoing series of deeply considered case studies on the successes and challenges they face. Building on 10 years of research in India, the School is launching an executive education series with classes taught by senior faculty members using cases tailored to the specific needs of companies operating in India.

The Harvard School of Public Health helped establish the Public Health Foundation of India and is an active partner in training public health officials to combat infectious disease.

The Harvard Graduate School of Design's Department of Landscape Architecture sponsors a student collaboration with Mumbai-based planners and policymakers on a comprehensive redevelopment program for 600 acres in the city's downtown area.

The Harvard Divinity School's Center for the Study of World Religions—founded nearly 50 years ago—brings the multidisciplinary intellectual resources of the University to bear on both intra- and inter-religious questions and issues, with increasing focus on Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism in the context of global challenges such as economic development, nationalism, and human rights.

The Faculty of Arts & Sciences Standing Committee on South Asian Studies focuses on and coordinates education and scholarship on South Asia in a broad range of humanities and social science disciplines. The Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies concentrates on the region's languages as well as literary, religious, and philosophical traditions. Sanskrit has been taught since 1872. The Department of History has a robust PhD program in modern South Asian and Indian Ocean History. Graduate and undergraduate education with a South Asia focus is currently offered by the Departments of Anthropology, Economics, English, History, Music, Near East Languages and Civilizations, Sanskrit and Indian Studies and the Committee on Religion.

The Harvard University Art Museums house one of the finest collections of Asian art in the United States, including noted Indian, Tibetan, Buddhist, and Islamic works and one of the most important representations of Rajasthani painting in the world.
